NIGERIA INDEPENDENCE SPECIAL ARTICLE:

SPECIAL FEATURE: WORDS ON MARBLE 35 WITH JOSHUA OSAGIE (AKA JI), ON TRIBUTE TO NIGERIA AT 51. INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY.

THE BITTER TRUTH (with Joshua Osagie aka JI)

The topic looks so striking and one would think it is an article to lambaste the government or a few people. No! We all share in whatever is written in this post, even the world at large is involved in this striking topic. Believe you me, the truth may be bitter, but it can only make us better. Now let’s go!

Before I move into details, let me say “Happy Independence Nigeria,” the best is yet to come.

Henry Ford said, “coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success”, end of quote. There is no doubt it was arousing celebrations 51 years ago when Nigeria had her Independence from the British Colony after much agitations for decades. What where the reasons for the agitations? The major reason was for freedom of leadership within the citizenry and purposeful development and that is “sovereignty” . The purpose of sovereignty is for the people and not for a few. Hence, the anthem reads, “the labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain…….” Now let me ask a question, “are we fulfilling the purpose of freedom?” Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “freedom is not the right to live as we please but the right to find how we ought to live in order to fulfill our potential,” end of quote.

Well, we are already familiar with the history of this great country and I don’t need to emphasize on the history but the way forward considering the so many topsy-turvy surrounding the nation. This is not the time to concentrate on blaming government alone, the people have always been and are part and parcel of governance. As I always say, “there are two people who can change Nigeria, and they are you and me”. Yes! I am a Nigerian and every other person is a Nigerian, as long as you are a citizen. Remember, Nigerian is of paramount importance in the committee of nations as a result of the vast natural resources, and impact to other nations over time that makes this article connected to whoever is reading across the globe.

NOW THE BITTER TRUTH IS REVEALED

As I said earlier, “the truth is bitter but can only make us better,” I am the type that spares no one in unveiling the truth and defending it. Day after day we condemn the government of the day as the reasons for the turmoil in Nigeria. When I say “turmoil,” I mean the so many problems including electricity, unemployment, insecurity, corruption, etc. Now, this bitter truth is all about saying things the right way whether it pleases you or not. I will be categorizing the citizenry from the government to the people as we unveil the bitter truth which must be made known for Nigeria to move forward. We are faced with different problems here and there, what are we doing wrong and what are we doing right to improve on? That is the big question as we commence in details.

· GOVERNMENT

· RELIGIOUS LEADERS

· THE WORLD AT LARGE ( To multinationals and associates, foreign investors, the world at large, the youths the entire citizens of Nigeria)

I will try and be brief and straight to the point.

<<<<>>>>

I am not writing to castigate any individual or the government in general, but to unveil the bitter truth of the situation of the country. I so much appreciated the Independence Lecture organized by the president few days ago, International Journalists and other renowned people were invited and they delivered their speech uncompromisingly. Let me emphasize on the striking statement made by one of the speakers on the issue of Nigerian political office holders being the highest paid all over the world. That is a fact and not overemphasis of common knowledge. The records are there. It has been said time and again that the cost of running government is too expensive in Nigeria, prospective political office holders tend to be desperate as they jostle for appointments and elections with the mindset of sharing from the national cake, thereby increasing the chances of corruption. If political positions can be made less attractive as regards the take home pay and allowances, more credible people of goodwill will definitely become involved in running government.

The mindset of people out there is that political positions are quick-rich scam, you can build a house and bad flashy cars once appointed or elected. The Governor of the CBN was almost crucified by the parliament when he announced that 25% of the Nigerian budget is allocated to the legislators in reality. Yes! Can the Nigerian parliamentarians take a cue from their counterparts in the United States who make use of buses for parliamentary meetings from their parliamentary residence. Unthinkable, they will say.

Government and the youths: Furthermore, different militant groups are agitating here and there, crime rate is increasing (kidnapping, armed robbery, internet crime, and many more), the youths are restive all for the sake of unemployment. Don’t you think if government can cut down on running governance, funds can be realized to get these youths settled in one way or the other? Examination malpractice is increasing by the day and we are wondering what the reasons are. Get this now, unemployed youths are 50% the cause of examination malpractice at the secondary and tertiary level with impersonation every now and then. The government may be wondering why examination malpractice is worsening, the answer is unemployment of graduates. Remember, “every government starts with education and well being of our youths who are the future.” Nepotism should be checked and discouraged in job appointment in government establishments. Let the best be employed. I have my reserve for the so many recruitments by government over the years that have been squashed in one way or the other. The “put my boy” or “put my girl” syndrome should be checked and discouraged. I write from obvious fact.

Government and the senior citizens (retired people): Yes the government is liable to taking care of the retired citizens for life. It will surprise you to know that so many pensioners out there are yet to get their gratuity after over a decade of service to the nation. I this right? A big no of course. In a nation whereby political office holders are the highest paid worldwide, I will say that is outright dehumanization. Government may have tried at the federal level, but bad eggs are making a mess of the efforts. Pensioners are screened repeatedly over time, but I stand to be corrected using my state as a standard, the year 2000 retirees of the Federal Government are yet to get their gratuity except by the so-called long legs, that is nepotism yet again.

Government and insecurity problems: It has been a period of unfortunate bomb blast, especially since last year. Ethno-religious violence in Jos, the Boko Haram, Niger Delta militancy and others. There is no doubt the Federal government has done so well to a large extent in terms of handling the issue of militants in Niger Delta. However, a generally holistic approach will go a long way to handling insecurity. One giant stride in curbing insecurity is handling the issue of unemployment seriously. Furthermore, no region of the country should be ignored. Security agencies should be equipped with modern day gadgets across each states. Intelligence agencies should be up and doing by employing experts.

Government, electricity (power), roads and other infrastructure: So many promises have been made under this new democratic era as regards electricity, we are only praying that the new government will change the trend. Only time will tell. You know sometimes it is easier said than done.” My friend Aesop said, “after all is said than done, more is said than done,” end of quote. We are watching. The issue of road construction have been overlooked, road construction at the federal level should spread to other states without restriction. Other infrastructural facilities that will create jobs and improve on efficiency and man power should be handled. Power will create jobs for youths, believe (you) me.

<<<<>>>

Enough of talking about government alone, we are all part of governance. In one way or the other religious leaders are contribute to the growth of a nation and that is a fact. Unfortunately, so many religious leaders have become promoters of corruption rather than preachers of integrity. Favouritism, oppression, sectionalism, corruption, nepotism are now practiced in the church. Can you imagine a church leader promoting a new convert by appointment for councillorship position because of his influence politically? That has become a common trend in so many churches. With due respect to religious leaders, you all have a big work to do in the church and the larger society. Politicians should be advised and thought the doctrines of Christ, not to be pampered with positions in the church or with special prayers. No one should be disregarded in the church because everyone is important. Favouritism and nepotism should be far from the church. Furthermore, many churches are becoming fighting and killing grounds as regards praying for the death their enemies. Where is the love and compassion thought you by Jesus Christ. Christian religious leaders should contribute to nation building as regards infrastructures and helping the less privilege. Some are getting involved already and it is good.

To the Islamic leaders, religious wars have been encouraged by some Islamic leaders; is this right? The tenets of Islam are clearly written for everyone to see and read, violence is far from the tenets. Violence should be discouraged at all cost by Islamic leaders.

<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>

To multinationals and associates, foreign investors, the world at large, the youths the entire citizens of Nigeria, this is for you:

· Multinationals, associates, foreign investors and the likes should be part of developing Nigeria. Be part of the corporate social responsibility and help the people around you. Create more jobs and enhance your productivity. Your employment procedures should not be based on nepotism, be fair and make integrity your watchword.

· To the world at large, keep supporting what is right and stand against what is wrong in Nigeria. Do not play games with the nation with sweet words of praises in disguise. Praise the government only when it is right. Stand for what is right. Don’t only come closer to Nigeria because of her vast natural resources, think of ways to pay back to Nigeria and you invest with her.

TO MY FELLOW YOUTHS AND THE ENTIRE CITIZENS OF THIS GREAT NATION

My friend Ralph Waldo Emerson quotes, “whatever games are played with us, we must play no games with ourselves. Avoid violence for violence profits nothing. I feel for every jobless youth day after day. Let us keep hope alive as we wait for the government of the day. Don’t sit at home idle, venture into genuine opportunities and make yourself valuable to people around you. Avoid crime because whatever evil you commit today will definitely affect you (negatively) tomorrow, believe (you) me.

As citizens of this great nation, we all should make integrity our watchword, stand up for what is right and oppose what is wrong from whoever. Contribute your quota to nation building. Let peace and unity overshadow ethnic and religious violence.

VIOLENCE AS A MESSAGE?

I am an advocate of peace and will not subscribe to killing of people as a way to passing a message to the government. The so called militant groups across the nation should stop the carnage and embrace peace. You can’t be killing your own people in pretence of fighting for them. That is evil. Sending threats to people will effect no change in the positive direction.

TO THE GOVERNMENT

Of course, you see the partial uprising, I believe they can be avoided if all is made well. It is the constant and determined effort that breaks down all resistance and sweeps away all obstacles, employ the youths I say. Generate jobs and expose elites involved in sponsoring violence. The youths can not purchase those sophisticated weapons.

THE SPATE OF KIDNAPPING

Kidnapping is on the increase, especially in the South. Help the youths to save their future. Kidnappers and their sponsors should please make Nigeria a safer place for all.

<<<<<<>>>>>>

In candid conclusion, for a change to take place in Nigeria, we all need to be part of that change. Avoid corruption or fraud wherever you are. Bankers should not change figures, civil servants should be up and doing. Go to work punctually, laziness should not be part of you, seek to improve daily. The government should be sincere in his dealings and the citizens should support government in any way useful way. It is individual commitment to a group effort that makes a team work. I believe every individual has a place to fill in the world and is important in some respect, whether he chooses to be so or not, no one is unimportant; there is no one called a small fry.

Happy Independence Nigeria. I hope for a better Nigeria before October 1st 2012. God bless you.
